What to Look for When Hiring
Specific AI tool fluency. Ask what tools the team uses daily. A genuine AI-augmented developer can name their tools and describe how they integrate them into workflow. Cursor, Claude, Copilot, and specific AI testing tools are the current standard.
Architecture capability. Anyone can generate code with AI. The people worth hiring are those who can review what AI generates and make sound architectural decisions about what to keep, what to reject, and what to redesign.
Communication pattern. Ask for a trial engagement or a paid scoping call before committing to a larger contract. How engineers communicate — their clarity, their honesty about uncertainty, their responsiveness — is as important as their code quality.
References you can actually contact. Reputable teams provide references. Testimonial logos on a website without a live reference available are not references.
Clear IP and confidentiality terms. Any engagement involving proprietary product work should include explicit IP assignment (all work product belongs to you) and NDA coverage. This is standard; if an agency pushes back, it’s a warning sign.
Common Mistakes
Hiring the cheapest option. The cost floor for Indian AI development exists because there are agencies running junior engineers with minimal oversight and billing them as senior. The output is usually lower quality than the price suggests — and fixing it costs more than the savings.
No direct communication with engineers. If the agency insists all communication goes through a project manager and you can never talk directly to the engineers, you lose visibility into the actual work. For complex projects, direct engineer access matters.
