That case is still true. But in 2026, there’s a more interesting argument: India’s AI development talent is not just cheaper — it’s genuinely competitive at the frontier.
Here’s why international startups are increasingly choosing Indian AI development teams, and what to look for when you evaluate one.
The talent argument
India produces more software engineers annually than any other country — roughly 1.5 million engineering graduates per year. A significant and growing portion of that talent is specialising in AI, machine learning, and AI-assisted development workflows.
The tier-one Indian developers working at AI-first companies are not second-string. They’re people who chose to stay in India (or return after international experience) to build at home, often because the quality of work and the compensation relative to local cost of living is competitive with international offers.
What this means for international clients: you can access genuinely senior AI development capability at rates that would correspond to mid-level talent in London, Berlin, or San Francisco.
The AI-native advantage
The AI productivity wave has been more evenly distributed than people expected. A developer in Goa using Cursor, Claude, and GitHub Copilot has access to the same productivity multipliers as a developer in Seattle using the same tools.
What this has done is compress the advantage that traditional outsourcing destinations had in infrastructure, tooling, and access to cutting-edge practices. The term is overused. Many agencies have updated their websites to say “AI-powered” while their actual workflow has not changed.
What to look for when evaluating an AI-first Indian development team:
1. Specific tooling, not general claims Ask what tools they use and how they use them. Specific answers (Cursor for primary code editing, Claude for complex generation tasks, custom prompts for scaffolding) indicate real practice. Vague answers (“we use the latest AI tools”) indicate a marketing update.
2. Concrete timeline evidence AI-assisted development should produce verifiably faster timelines. Ask for comparable project histories: what did a similar project take with and without AI tooling? If they can’t answer, they haven’t measured it.
3. Code quality standards Faster development that produces unmaintainable code is not a win. Ask about test coverage on recent projects, code review processes, and what documentation is delivered with the codebase.
4. Client references who stayed past v1 The real test of a development partner is whether clients come back for v2, v3, and ongoing work. A client list full of one-time projects is a warning sign.

Time zones: India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+5:30. For European clients, this creates useful overlap: Indian teams are online in the morning when European teams start their day. For US clients, async-first communication is typically the most efficient approach.
Communication: English is the professional language of India’s IT industry. For experienced international-facing teams, written communication is clear and direct. Video calls work well; budget for the occasional audio quality issue.
Contract structures: Indian development companies are accustomed to international contracts with Western IP ownership requirements. Ensure your contract specifies code ownership, data handling, and confidentiality explicitly — these should be standard provisions, not negotiating points.
Payment: International wire transfer and services like Wise are standard. Most serious Indian agencies invoice in USD or EUR for international clients.
The honest limitations
Distance friction is real. Async communication works well for implementation but is slower for collaborative design decisions and requirement discovery. Budget more time for project kickoff and milestone reviews.
Quality varies widely. The range of quality in Indian software development is enormous. Strong independent signals matter more than agency size or polished marketing.
Time zone math for urgent issues. If you have a production outage at 2pm London time, your Indian team is available. At 11pm London time, they are not. Understand the support model for post-launch operations before you sign.
How to evaluate an Indian AI development partner
Ask these questions before you commit:
- Can I see three recent codebases from similar projects? (Full code review, not screenshots)
- What is the test coverage on your typical deliverable?
- Who specifically would work on my project — and can I speak with them before signing?
- What does your spec/definition process look like?
- What happens if the project runs over scope?
- Can I talk to three recent clients?
A serious agency answers all of these directly. A good agency welcomes the scrutiny.
